disk defragmentation


Guyz how does one perform disk defragmentation on linux?

You shouldn't ever need to defrag a linux hard drive. If you're having probelms you feel are hard drive related here's a nice page on disk maintenance.

What if linux tell you u have 17% non-contigous blocks. Offcourse this slows down your programs. The aim would be make them contigous.

if you donīt pack you partitions with more than 90% of amount, you shouldnīt ever have to defrag your disk.

But for information's sake: How do you defragment a disc anyway?

there is command

defrag

in linux

it requires JFS

You back up the contents to some other media, re-format. and then restore the backup.
