Danger RedHat and MySQL 4.0 & Up2date
So if you use up2date, and have installed MySQL 4.0 server, or client, beware of this.
When using Up2date for updating PHP on our system, the Up2date program noticed we had "PHP_MySQL" as well, and updated that as well, and while at it, it noticed the version of MySQL that PHP_MySQLused, was not the version it wanted, i.e. version 3.23.. So it overwrote MySQL version 4.0 wiped out the install of MySQL_server4.0.. and reduced our server to worthless junk.
This is "according to RedHat" our fault for using a non RedHat approved program, (MySQL_Server4.0) and we should have known better.
I urge all of you to not use Up2date, not only will it hose your system with no recourse, it is designed in such a way, that it will load any program RedHat would like, unless you have it on the "exclude list" in the configuration. The problem with this is you have to know about the program before you can exclude it, so this is worthless, and could be used to load ANYTHING on your machine. Do not trust them, do not support them.
We are looking to other Linux versions, RedHat sounds to much like a poorly run Microsoft with delusions of dictatorship.
A first year web programmer could come up with better logic and scripting that RedHat has managed in their Up2date software, even if they did not become nefarious loading Trojans on systems in the dark of the night, they have such bad programming that you are still hosed.
