Unhappy CUPS/HPLIP vs Kernel-2.4.18-14

Hi all

i'm running redhat 8 and i just compiled cups/hplip for my system and my HP Deskjet 3745 printer.
Code:
#/etc/init.d/cups start===>OK
#/etc/init.d/hpiod start===>OK
#/etc/init.d/hpssd start===>OK
The services seem to work fine but lpr doesn't work:
output:
Code:
Status Information:
 sending job 'root@hermes+313' to HP3745@localhost
 connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
 cannot open connection to localhost
Make sure the remote host supports the LPD protocol
I know my linux system needs an update but is there anyway to get lpr working? Do i really need to update my linux kernel to 2.4.19?

Thanx for any help.
