i have an acer travelmate c100 that i love. perfect size overall and perfect screen. for my needs anyway.
i tried loading puppy linux on it and nada. this is what i kept getting:
"loading kernal drivers needed to access disk drives....done
searching for puppy files in computer disk drives....pup-301.sfs not found. dropping out to initial -ramdisk console /bin/sh: can't access tty;job control turned off"
help? anyone?
i really want to get this going with the tablet/pen options. as well as the pcmcia card slot because i use a netgear pc card wifi modem i'd LOVE to nget working with this.
right now i am using freespire as it is the most zippy on my lil pc. would prefer to use something else cause the whole CNR bs is annoying and i can't figure out how to make it do what i need it to do. i mean i can't get my emulaters and games running on it..
i want my puppy!!!
Try Puppy 4.0 or Puppy 4.1 Alpha 4. These are more likely to support your hardware. There is also a version of 4 with a newer kernel. Try the Alpha as last resort.
i tried the version 4.0 "dingo" do you know where i could find "Puppy 4.1 Alpha 4"?
i was looking and the manual says that the hd should be formatted with 4 partitions along side windows. seems kinda odd to me. my hd was formatted in ms dos. i am thinking that might very well be the problem. or i could be nuts..*L*
AAWWWMAN!! am i gonna have to reload windoze on this thing just to get puppy to work? crap. *sigh* well there goes another 2 hrs. good thing i have the restore discs and a seperate winhoze xp pro disc as well..
I don't know what an acer travelmate c100 is so not sure why that would cause any problems. I think you mis-read something the manual says that the hd should be formatted with 4 partitions along side windows. I installed Puppy 4.0 two days ago and I remember the instructions saying Puppy only installs up to 4 files. You need to format in a Linux filesystem, ext2, ext3, reiser, etc.
You do not need to format the partition to any linux partitions, and puppy can be installed in NTFS or FAT partitions and can stay in the same partition as windows.
There is a Frugal option select that and then modify the MBR with the boot manager program in puppy from any live media.
In case of this "frugal" installation a file with linux filesystem inside it gets created in yout FAT/NTFS drive which is loaded in RAM when you boot.
If you want a full installation which is similar to other linux installations , and this needs linux file system.
So first fry the frugal installation.
check the puppy wiki. and you will get all the guide.
and did you burnt the iso image in a CD drive? and are you shure that the .sfs file is in that very cd or any accessable drive)
Distribution: Puppy 4.0, Ubuntu 7.04, Mandriva Spring 2008, Open Süse 11, Mandrake 10, Slackware and more

Rep:
It seems that booting fails with the CD??
After burning the iso Cd there was no problem to boot on my omputer mad with a lot of rubbish.
After starting, I have
1 - closed all and restarted with windows
2 - compressed the whole disk
3 -rebooted with Puppy
4 - launched Gparted (System menu)
5 - shrunk the windows partition to the minimum
6 - created the Linux partition and the swap partition
7 - launched the installation
It has been working perfectly.
Now the message
searching for puppy files in computer disk drives....pup-301.sfs not found. dropping out to initial -ramdisk console /bin/sh: can't access tty;job control turned off"
means that Puppy could not write on this damn windows partition. Strange it worked also with the new computer (ugly vista) and on an old Compaq laptop (millenium) coming straight from a dustbin??
Does it really fails when you launch it from the CD?
Regards
Marc
I did it!
I was trying to install puppy 4.1 (2.6.25.16 kernel) but I was getting the same problem you had, Skarlet.
searching for puppy files in computer disk drives...pup_412.sfs not foud. Dropping out to initial-ramdisk console...
/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

So I searched the pup file on the cd in another computer and copied the file to a pen drive and then to the c: root on the computer I was trying to install the puppy. Then I went to the same procedure inserting the live cd and all and voilá!
Now I'm following instructions from the wiki to install it on the hdd
