Question error 11 unrecognized device string

Hi, I am triple booting Windows XP,Ubuntu, and Puppy 400. At the grub, when I choose Puppy, I get the error message error 11 unrecognized device string. This is a new install of Puppy.

I used frugal install and have a new partition for the iso and kernel etc.

I modified the grub (menu.lst) in hd0,4 to include this:

title Puppy Linux 400 Frugal
root noverify (hd0,3)
kernel /puppy400/vmlinuz pmedia=idehd
initrd /puppy400/init.gz

I can boot to HD from the CD, but would like to be able to boot directly from grub.

Help!

The main problem I spotted is that the file in your last line should read initrd.gz, not init.gz. Are your puppy files on hda4?

Try this:
title Puppy Linux 400 Frugal
root (hd0,3)
kernel (hd0,3)/puppy400/vmlinuz PMEDIA=idehd
initrd (hd0,3)/puppy400/initrd.gz

goot an error 17 message this time

Good morning Honeysuckle,
I tried your suggestion. I get an error 17 this time. Grub menu.lst is located on sda5 (hd0,4). Puppy is on sda3. Right now I don't know Puppy's hd0 number.

Got interested lately in minimal installation, and Puppy is minimal, but amazing speed for one who has a two year old computer.

I tried putting the grub menu in Puppy's partition, but got into all sorts of problems with that. I couldn't boot anything.

Thanks for the information. Any more help would be appreciated.

Problem Solved: Thanks Honeysuckle I used your menu.lst configuration, but changed to (hd0,2), and Puppy booted!

Now for the fun part. Playing with this great little distro.
