I'd just like to introduce myself.
Dick Summerfield's the name and I'm from the Netherlands.
I've just ordered a second-hand laptop so that I can mess about with a computer away from home. I was looking at Linux distro's (because this will be a Linux only machine) and had decided on openSUSE when I found this old live CD with Puppy 431 on it.
I'm running that now on an old laptop belonging to my daughter and I have to say I'm having a lot of fun!!! The big question now is will I forget about openSUSE (apparently it's a good distro for laptop use).

Now a question! I did a lot of technical drawing on my Windows box using a CAD program which is definitely Windows only. I know there is a program called QCAD which runs on Linux but is that available for Puppy? Or any other CAD program?
Anyone know please?

Welcome to LQ and welcome to the world of Puppy Linux. AFAIK, no Qcad for Puppy. You might want to check the Puppy forum; I'm pretty sure I've seen discussions there regarding CAD programs on Puppy.

You also, might want to investigate wine, which will let you run some windows programs.
And there is also VirtualBox that one can run in Puppy that will allow you to create a file that is seen by VitualBox as a hard drive. You install windows on the virtual drive and then you can run windows in Puppy.

Thanks for the tip. I'd heard of wine, though have no experience with it. Presumably not all Windows programs work with it? But it's worth a try - as the only CAD program I know, which runs on Linux, I don't really get on with.

As a followup, VirtualBox lets you run a complete operating system like Windows 98, XP, Vista, linux versions, etc.
in a window on the Puppy desktop, or full screen over the Puppy desktop.
If you are running a frugal install of Puppy, be sure to use the SFS version of VirtualBox and make your virtual drives outside of your pupsave in /mnt/home.
