xml and javascript

Okay i know how to open an xml file and read it with javascript but how do i read a xml string? I have a function that has a string variable passed to it and that variable is just an xml string but i have no idea how to parse through it i tried alert(xmlString.childNodes(0).text); but that gives an error so im pretty sure i need to convert the string to an object somehow

Is this even possible because i can't find how to do it anywhere!
