Why can't Digikam/gtkam notice my Nikon Camrea

Tried to get my Pics on digikam but it shows, "Error Connecting".
Was told to get a card reader.

Has anyone had a problem loading their camera into the USB?

Have spent 3 day's trying to get this to work.
