Programming This forum is for all programming questions.
The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Actually I will most likely be programming for Windows, but I would like to learn a language that is platform independent. Like I said I did some Autoit programming, but that is Windows Only.

That's quite alright. I just wanted to make sure I was helping you find the language you wanted. I still suggest PHP, but if that's too online then start with Python. Python's a good language I just find the DB accesses (which you expressed an interest in) too be a little obfuscated, especially for a beginner.

ok, I am somewhat familiar with PHP from when I used to do basic web development.

I guess I will look into python and c or c++ as an option. PHP is on my list to learn but I think that is a project I would like to take on later when I have a more solid mindset for development.

Hello:

Have you thought of looking at Delphi?

Great for Data Base apps.
Great IDE.
Can do .net
Can do Data Base web apps.
Is fast.
Creates stand alone .exe files.

Our programmer says that Delphi can do 'anything' and that it could do it before Visual Basic and C Sharp and is a lot easier to learn. (object pascal)

But, what does he know?

pick one and just start

Remember that all languages are easy for humans. Most of us learn our primary language between ages 3 and 5. Pick a language and get started.

I'm not going to join the "language X is better because" preaching.
Instead, let me suggest that

1. you learn to think about your problem
2. you learn to identify the data involved and the relationships
among the data
3. you learn to identify the manipulations of that data

If you choose one of the scripting languages -- bash, perl, python -- you will be able to create all sorts of things that are useful to your linux workstation. In addition, there will be hundreds of programs and thousands of code examples that you can learn from easily. Languages like C or C++ have examples too but add a great deal of complexity to what you need to work with so that you can see results -- edit source code, compile, find required libraries, link with libraries.

Good luck,
~~~ 0;-Dan
