Shell scripts???

Hi, I am a student studying Linux. I was working on a script at school on a SuSE system. I took it home where I am running Fedora Core 2. I had set the -e switch for passwd to prompt user to reset passwd at first logon, but Fedora did not have this switch for passwd. How do you do something like this? How can you make a shell script that uses commands with switches if some distros may not have the same switch? Again I am sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks.
Fred.
