Shell script question - Lynx + input variables

Very newbie question, I hope this is an appropriate place to ask:

I'm trying to write a script to perform a repetitive online task using lynx. I'm using a lynx cmd_log to run through the motions, however the page requires a login name. My main question is, if I say "Enter name and hit return:" how do I break that name into individual letter variables. I hope that's not too unclear.

Thanks for any help. I've never posted here before.

Welcome to LQ.

I'm not sure if this is what you are asking but:

read -p "Please enter first and last name. " FIRSTNAME LASTNAME

Now you have two strings $FIRSTNAME and $LASTNAME

What are you trying to do?

Automating Web ops. is often done better w/ wget or curl. Both are very powerful, & the man pages reflect this -- they are long & can be confusing, but are comprehensive.
