Looking at the OP (post 1) I'd guess the 'challenge' is he didn't know how to solve it, in particular he was worried about the large size (10GB+) of each file. (Post 27 says 15GB).
The 'awk' bit I think is because he guessed/assumed that would be a good tool to use.
