problem compiling first qt/kde program

I seem to be having another moment when I'm missing something everybody else gets.

I've read quite a lot of stuff about writing basic programs, (almost)everything I've read says i have to set $QTDIR and $KDEDIR variables to the location that there installed, but i quick look through my system doesn't really give a goo indication where they are. ( anything that seems promising doesn't seem to have the right sub folders)

Could someone please enlighten me on where i should be setting these variables to?

sorry should have said im running debian sid

Theres nothing under /opt, theres a qt3 dir somewhere ,but it doesn't really have anything inside that that seems relevant. Well to be more precise i expected to see a include folder under there.

Could it be that i need special kde packages? There doesn't seem to be much about whats required for development, id love to be proved wrong and shown some documentation
