PHP IDE with integrated FTP?

Hi all,

I have been using a program called HTML-Kit for quite some time now. Honestly, it's ugly as hell, it has some design quirks, but overall I love it.

The one feature that owns me is the integrated FTP browser. I've tried quite a few IDEs before, but I just can't find this in anything but HTML-Kit.

I'll include a screenshot so you can see what I mean. I can access all of my FTP locations in the browser, and edit files directly off the server. It saves me TONS of time.

The problem is that it only runs on Windows, which I'm incredibly sick of, and instead am trying to move most of my development over to Linux (RH 7.3 for now).

Nearly all of my Linux experience has been on the command-line, on my Slackware server, so I haven't experimented with many X apps. Does anyone use or know of an app like this?

Thanks in advance

Thanks macewan, but I should have mentioned I've read through that, and I would really like a native Linux app. Don't really want to run it through wine every time I want to code..

Tekme, that's such a refreshing attitude nfor a newbie. Not that sure wether you are or not though if you're used to command line work...

anyway I use Anjuta alot for perl and c programming. i'm sure it'll do PHP aswell, but i don't think it;s got ftp facilities in it. Something like that would be something of a novelty imho. i just use gftp for my ftp stuff.

acid_kewpie: Well, I guess you could say I'm quasi-newbie. I'm definitely no guru, but at least I have some experience. Anjuta looks good. Maybe not for PHP, but I do experiment in C/C++ (in fact, I just got Bjarne Stroustrup's "The C++ Programming Language" in an attempt to really learn the language, so I need a good IDE for C/C++ anyway). Nearly all of my web dev is done in PHP, although I used to work with perl fairly often, and may be picking it up again for my job.

macewan: I tried Bitflux for the heck of it, although truly I can't use a WYSIWYG editor for the kind of work I'm doing. It actually looked pretty cool though, and I will probably play with it some more if not just for templating sites purposes.

I guess I have my hopes set too high, as far as the FTP browser goes.

Except now I'm wondering how tough it would be to just go and make my own....

Thanks a bunch for your help again

Quanta and the others are the best available for linux.
I use Quanta for large web Projects

Best under MS at this stage is www.phpedit.net (Auto Complete)and its Free

Run a local server for editing files

Well Dreamweaver would have to be the most advanced software on the market for easy web design killing front page2002 in it tracks but lets forget that for now-ouch as its usless for hand coding and costs more than 2 weeks in hospital

I don't think you are allowed to use HTML-Kit for commercial websites
Give them the boot no matter how good the software is.
Personal use blah blah Really annoying they are there for the dollars in a way just to suggest it.

Okay I know this thread has grown old and grey, but to be honest with you I had forgotten about it after a mean bout with a particular Mandrake CD eating one of my computers... plus a plethora of work over the last month.

At any rate, regarding HTML-Kit, I read the personal license and I haven't seen anything about not using it for commercial sites - if that is the case then I'm very upset with them!!

Since there are no such features for any IDE usable in Linux, do you think it would be really tough to make my own? I don't have a lot of programming experience outside of web technologies, but I know basic C and C++ and I'm currently studying it. Could anybody point me to some resources to research the basics of programming under Linux, and more specifically making a text editor? Are there any libraries or apps out there that already provide just the most basic text editing features? I have made a basic editor using Dev-C++/MingW under Win32 and I'm sure it will be very different; but I'm hoping I can carry some of the concepts over.

All I want is a basic editor with syntax highlighting for PHP and an integrated FTP browser. Is that really too much to ask?!

Thanks for any tips on this.

PS: Thanks for the help but to be totally honest with you - the day I use Dreamweaver is the day I cut off my fingers and denounce web design completely. PHPEdit doesn't do it for me, it might be nice with FTP browsing but aside from that it really doesn't cut it.
