php excel odbc issue

Hi LQ people!

I'm having problems to set up this:

I want my user to access a webpage, select some stuffs (filtering purpose) and download a listing of datas as an excel file.
I already did this. my DB is postgres and I use BIFFwriter for the excel conversion.

Now, my problem is that I want my user to be able to edit datas in the excel cells and when he/she press "save file" in excell... the added datas are automatically saved in my postgres DB.

Someone told me about doing an odbc link or something like that but I'm a bit lost.

If u guyz know how to handle this, make me a sign.

PS: I know I could do that directly "within" the browser... but the users need the excel files for other purposes.

Is there a way to connect to a distant postgresql database and export the
data directly from excel?

in 3 steps:
- I'm going on a website and opening an excel file on my desktop
- I'm modifying or adding some data in cells
- I press the excel Save File button, and then, the distant DB should be updated.

I was looking on the postgresSQL forum but no real solution

Well ... the approach is utterly convoluted, you'd
be much better off to have the tabular data displayed
in an HTML table and update it via PHP. Introducing
Excel as an additional layer is just daft since you
don't appear to be storing any formulas or stuff
back into PostgreSQL in the first place.

Cheers,
Tink
