PHP and gdlib

I have a project in which I need to create images on the fly. I have everything working fine, but I need the abilities of some functions in gdlib 2.0 and higher. I upgraded my gdlib installation to 2.0, but PHP is refusing to use it. It still only utilizes the old version. How to I get PHP to recognize the new library and use the functions from that? I have tried editing the php.ini file to no avail. Do I need to recompile and install PHP? Any help woud be greatly appreciated. I'm stumped.

Apache 2.0 | Red Hat 7.3 | PHP 4.3.0 | gdlib 2.0

Below is the gd section of phpinfo().

gd
GD Support enabled
GD Version 1.6.2 or higher
FreeType Support enabled
FreeType Linkage with freetype
JPG Support enabled
PNG Support enabled
WBMP Support enabled

I can see that it's all there and works fine, but it isn't using the 2.0 library.

Upgrade your PHP while you're at it, to fix a serious CGI vulnerability.
