Pass data between windows

How do i pass data between browser windows? You know like in yahoo mail when you compose a message and click on the to and a new window opens with all of your addresses, you select the ones that you want the and window closes and your address are showing up in the text box.

Any one know whow to do this, just pass the data?

Is this done using the POST method?

I know for a fact that this would have do be done in PHP
