open up a terminal within vim

I've been learning C recently and have used Vim to write my code, however switching between tabs to compile and run annoys me so i was wondering if it would be possible to have a terminal in the bottom half of the screen inside vim. similar to most text editors.

How could i do this.

Thanks in advance

According to this, colon-exclamation (:!) will allow you to shell execute. Granted, it's not exactly a terminal though.

Since you won't have access to the arrow keys for your history, here is some stuff about that. !! gives you your last command.
