need help for sound recording and play back in linux redhat?


i need help in writing a program that can record sound and playback the sound.
can any1 help me out. im using linux redhat 9.0 for this application.
im new in this OS, so can u also provide the steps in doing this.

in any shell:
cat /dev/audio > music_file_in_raw_format.au
cat music_file_in_raw_format.au > /dev/audio
Should work

what do u mean by cat /dev/audio > music_file_in_raw_format.au
cat music_file_in_raw_format.au > /dev/audio

i do not know what is this, can u help me out?

I suggest heading over to opensound.com, click on programming and read the OSS programmers guide. That is how i learned to design audio programs.

It means, that you could just open /dev/audio file for reading and read it, when you want to record,
and open /dev/audio file for writing, when you want to play.
Of course, you could open this file at the same time for reading and writing, as a different streams,
and you could record /paly simultaneously....
Al the data is the row .au format (byte by byte wave form i think, but not sure).
Looks like it is the simpliest method...
