MS access ODBC for linux

Hi.
I wonder how to set up ODBC for use with an Access database (.mdb) and jdbc(java)
Anyone who knows if this is possible and, if it is, how to do this ?

I've installed openoffice and ms access, i've setup odbc using one of the control panel of openoffice.

Thanks

I beliave that you are compiling on windows and trying to build a multiplatform database application on java. (how else would you have installed ms access? Perhaps wine?)

When you link to Microsoft Data Access Components in order to use Access database in your program you link to MDAC library. However, just because your computer has MS Access and MDAC installed it doesn´t mean that the computer you are deploying to has them. I´ve never heard of a MDAC java installer, I beliave only windows ones exists.

You should not use MDAC to a program that may be shiped to linux because of MDAC redistribution license. In order not to violate MDAC redistribution license you must ship the installer provided by Microsoft and that will not work on linux (perhaps on wine? but that should be a very bad option). I´ve already shiped programs with MDAC and I remember that I need different Microsoft installers for different Windows versions (some come with MDAC). Such a Windows version dependent program can only cause pain when installed on linux.

I recommend using another database. I am seeking a good multiplatform database myself but haven´t found one yet.

Hi -

Sekelsenmat is correct:

1. You don't necessarily need ODBC in conjunction with JDBC; JDBC alone should be sufficient to connect to an Access database.

2. Unfortunately, you need Microsoft runtime support (such as MDAC or the "Jet" Engine) in order to use the .mdb file.

3. Here is a discussion that might help:
