where is the java installed?
try
locate java

what you have is a variable called PATH like in DOS.
if the java does not exist on the PATH then it won't be found.

if you echo $PATH you'll see what it is.
try $JAVA_HOME too.

so you'll need to add $JAVA_HOME/bin to PATH.
this is best done in /etc/profile probably.

This is probably going to sound stupid, apologies if so, but why waste time downloading java compilers, when as well as gcj, SuSE 10 comes with the java sun jdk 1.4 and 1.5
