Question Introduction to Programming

Original question to an LSL (Australian) distributor "Pseudo code? Gcc? Kylix? Which one first? You reckon? Do you have a book that can start me up on this?"

Answer from Glen "I personally dont think pseudo code is good. Pseudo code is good when you want to present your program or logic to somebody else using an english like expression. There are other expressions such as logic programming, formal specification languages, etc."

"If you really want to start programming in Linux/Unix, learn about script programming first. It teaches you a lot with programming from start. It is like learning batch programming in DOS. Not too deep though, just enough to introduce you with the programming."

"Then, if you are really serious, go to C and C++ then after that if you really want to know Java, then you can go for it. Do not start Java first, it is like teaching yourself driving an auto car. Once you get used to with an easy driving, it is hard to put yourself into the manual driving."

Hi, everyone I sent the question on top and got the answer abobe but as you can see it doesn't tell me if there is a book that will guide an absolute beginner with his recomendations, I accept that script programming is the way to go but where do I get a book to help me start or a recomendation to a website. Can someone help?
Regards Jacinto

The Linux Documenation Project
Under the "Guides" link, there is Advanced BASH Programming. The description says that it does not expect any prior programming knowledge. Sound like it might be what you're looking for.
