How to write Linux code for 'datebook' ?

Please help me write this Linux code for 'datebook'

Grab a copy of the 'datebook':

Write a script to perform the following steps (is not required to be in this order)

First, you will need to remove the carriage control from the file
Second, remove the duplicated lines using a single command and save the output to a new file.
Third, change the phone number of each line from this format, 111-222-3333, to (111) 222-3333.
Fourth, place a comma in the last field before the hundreds place (In other words 10000 becomes 10,000).
Fifth, add a $ to the beginning of the last field of the file.

We will be glad to help you...as soon as you actually show some effort of your own. We aren't going to do your homework for you, and posting a verbatim homework question is plain lazy.

Read the LQ Rules and "Question Guidelines"...show us what YOU, PERSONALLY have written/done/tried, and tell us where you're stuck. Otherwise, you can find THOUSANDS of bash scripting tutorials online (even one in my posting signature), as well as probably in the textbook you have (which you may not have even bothered reading yet).

What is a "carriage control"?

Does it mean the file is in WinDOS format?

It's talking about removing the \n\r from the end of each line. I think it would even apply if the file was a linux one (with only a \n at the end).

As noted in your other thread as well, per the LQ Rules:

Quote:
Do not post homework assignments verbatim. We're happy to assist if you have specific questions or have hit a stumbling point, however. Let us know what you've already tried and what references you have used (including class notes, books, and searches) and we'll do our best to help. Keep in mind that your instructor might also be an LQ member.
Most members will be happy to help you with specific questions when you are having trouble, but posting your homework questions with no show of effort on your part will not help you learn and is not usually well received by others.
