I think Quanta is the best Web editor for Linux if you actually want to "code" your page ratter then programming it with a mouse with Dreamweaver, or worse, Frontpage.

Since you are taking a class, I'd recommend you to stick with the tools and platform that they recommend you to do. Later, you can venture untouched waters.

I guess CSS for designing pages is very popular (and should always be used, because it's great) and php with mysql is heavily used as well if you want a more dynamic homepage as a forum, a blog or a webshop.

Creating your pages in Windows is a good idea too. Not because of the tools, but because of Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, IE is still be most used browser and I think you will want to make sure your pages display correctly on IE. You could try, however, to use IE in Linux with wine or something...

No problems

For html, htmlgoodies is a great site:

http://www.htmlgoodies.com/

Here you can find nice "test your self" CSS code:

http://www.w3schools.com/css/

Here will get you started with PHP and MySQL if you wish to create a dynamic site:

http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/phpmysql

QuantaPlus, the IDE I've suggested is found here:

http://quanta.kdewebdev.org/

There're also a lot of free (and for selling) templates that you can google for. They range from home-made, table-designed templates to professional looking CSS designed templates. Just google for Templates

There's also NVU:

For a stunning display of the power (and beauty!) of CSS, check out CSS Zen Garden:
http://www.csszengarden.com/

Of all the 1000s and 1000s of HTML books out there, this is arguably the single best one for "newbies" - it's short, it's practical, it's *very* useful:
Teach yourself HTML and CSS in 24 Hours, 7th Edition; Dick Oliver & Michael Morrison

there is also openoffices's bluefish.. i have also used the new version of quanta a little.. prefer bluefish over it though.. but i still pretty well just use Kate for all web stuff (just hobby stuffs).. but i guess if you got into a big project you would want somthing to manage it a little better..

and to echo what everyone else has already mentioned
yes definately learn CSS, it is extremely cool! and php and mysql is the way to go if theyre available on the server..

probably php, mysql, there is a bunch of javascript on here. and i think vbscript runs the smiley faces.. oh and of course it uses CSS... a better answer may be posted somewhere on the site ??
