gtkmm swap child widgets

Basically, what I want to write is a function that takes a widget which has already been added to some form of Gtk::Container and check to see it it has its own Gdk::Window. If not, I want to slip a Gtk::EventBox under it. That is, I want to put the Gtk::EventBox in the widget's parent container with the same properties and all.

Ideally, I love it if there were some Gtk::Container::swap_children method, but there isn't. Has anyone else already solved this one? Suggestions? Thanks!
