error while loading shared libraries: libncurses.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Using debian 9, I get this message. I am not familiar with the use of libraries.

Googling, it seems there is no libncurses.so.6 for Debian but I am confused about what the problem really is.
I have libncurses.so.5 installed and have tried to install the ..5-dev files with no change in the result.

Is it a case that I have downloaded an app that can not work under Debian 9? I do not really want to upgrade to a newer OS version. I have used an older version of this app on another machine with an Intel processor while this machine is AMD.

Can anyone shed some light?

Thank you for your help.

libncursesw6 I believe is what you’re after. Not sure if it’s in stretch though.

A random idea:
Code:
apt-get install libncurses6

Sounds like the program you are using was compiled with a newer ncurses library. You either need to upgrade your ncurses or if possible recompile the application with the older ncurses if it'll support it. Most likely not.

Symlink libncurses.so.5 to libncurses.so.6.

Wouldn't Debian upgrade dependencies if a program required it to be installed through the package manager?
