database pooling in php?????

I have a quick question about database connections and PHP...

Now I come from a Java/servlet/jsp background and when creating a web-based application there is a requirement to pool database connections so, not to overload the RDBMS that you are using.

Is this the same for PHP? What are the best practices for managing database connections for say an e-commerce site using PHP and MySQL/PostgreSQL?

Thanks in advance for you advise...
