create a linux Multi-threaded library

How Can I create a multithreaded library? Is that only a compile option to use or I should change my library code ?
I have converted a windows library to linux version, the windows library is multithreaded but the linux one is single-threaded.
I use below commands to compile my library:

g++ -c -g $(CLASSES)
ar -r $(TARGET) $(OBJS)

You can link any library with pthreads and make it 'multithreaded'. But that won't make your code thread-safe, obviously.
