The "Dive Into" series (for Python, Python 3 and Html 5) is concise and free.

The A Byte Of series (for Vim and Python) are concise and free.

The C++ In Depth series is concise.

Peepcode's ebooks (i.e. the PDFs that accompany their screencasts) are concise.

The Visual Quickstart Guide series is concise.

The Head First series is concise (they're thick, but it's mostly pictures).

The In Action series (e.g. jQuery In Action) is concise.

Is there a complete title list of the Dive Into series? Did Mark Pilgrim author all of them?
