command line tool to control volume?

Is there a command line tool to control the sound volume? I would like to increase or decrease the volume of a currently playing mp3 file using the command line.

I don't thing that will workout, this is what im trying to do. I am creating an alarm clock (using shell programming) using cron and mpg123. What it will do is at 6am every morning a mp3 file will start playing using mpg123 but i would also like it to gradually increase the volume of the song so that i don't wake up to high volume and in shock.

it will work fine. have your script sleep and increment the volume each wakeup. i wrote a driver for an infrared remote, and my daemon uses aumix to lower the volume for mp3, the speaker vol, and the system vol.
