cgi-perl query


hi people!

i just install debian 4.0 with an apache2 and i want to build a simple
web pages like this:

name:
password:

after the user input the correct name and password the user will
then redirect to another webpage. iam new to web programing but willing to learn. can i use cgi? pls help me to begin this project thanks!

learn either php, perl (whatever interpreted language for cgi) or javascript (password won't be safe this way)

Do you know any programming? Technically, you can do CGI applications (which is a good way to do your login/authentication project) with any language that can read & write standard input, and interpret commandline arguments. Languages like PHP are tailor made for Web applications. Perl, the duct tape of the internet, is also very good for web application programming and has a plethora of good support libraries.
Tell us more about what level of experience you are starting with.

you are better off (probably) configuring apache for
password access rather than trying to do it with perl.

It would be quite non-trivial to get it working for a newbie.
you'd need to maybe store info in a database, encrypt and unencrypt,
use state cookies, etc.

I'd keep it simple to start with.
