You can change the scan rates and set arbitrary resolutions by editing the
xorg.conf file in most Linux distributions, though whether a particular setting will work depends on the video card and the monitor.
However, according to your profile you are running Damn Small Linux, which uses the lightweight Xvesa for the GUI. This will only allow video settings (such as resolution) to those provided by the BIOS, typically just VESA standard modes (you may be able to use 'Xvesa -listmodes' to show these).
