can you change VGAs refresh


can you change VGAs virtcal and horizontal scan rate to get a custom resoultion such as 512x390?

You can change the scan rates and set arbitrary resolutions by editing the xorg.conf file in most Linux distributions, though whether a particular setting will work depends on the video card and the monitor.

However, according to your profile you are running Damn Small Linux, which uses the lightweight Xvesa for the GUI. This will only allow video settings (such as resolution) to those provided by the BIOS, typically just VESA standard modes (you may be able to use 'Xvesa -listmodes' to show these).

640x480 and 800x600 is not much choice

also i was wondering can you change the X res from a C program

The ultimate way to control resolution and scan rate is to use a modeline. Here's my modeline calculator:

But, very important, many modern displays automatically tell the system what they are able to provide (using something called EDID), and if this information is available it is much more reliable and flexible than a modeline.
