C++ programs initial stack size.

I have a program on Slackware 9.1/9.0 that starts with an initial stack size of 2044kbytes.
On RedHat 9.0 this same program starts with an initial stack size of 8192kbytes.

The ulimit displays identical stack size limits on both platforms at 8192kbytes.
These are both stock distributions and the glib version is the same(or very close).

How can I get my program to start with the larger initial stack size? Is there
a CXX CPP or LDFLAG to set? Another clue maybe that my application
uses pthreads which may have some effect on the main programs stack size.

ld has a parameter to set initial stack size.
