[DesktopEnvironment] -> Menu Entries

Hello,
I've managed to get a new tree in my Applications menu(thanks to the freedesktop.org docs).
But in order to do that, I had to edit /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu.
What I want to make, is a program that automaticly adds a tree in the applications menu. But i'm not too keen on letting my script edit configuration files.
So my question is, is there any other way to add a tree-item in the users' menu, without editing system-wide configuration files(for example, the same way as creating an icon on your desktop, by creating a .desktop file).
Thanks in advance,
Hylke
