In the package manager (Synaptic), there is a search function.

The repositories used by Mepis include some Ubuntu and Debian.

Note that they recently announced they will move back to a Debian base vs a Ubuntu base--I don't know how this will affect package management.

Don't they offer any web-interface to search for packages? I don't have a MEPIS system.

If you don't have a MEPIS system, why are you asking?

Please elaborate.

In the Mepis repositories you only will find few packages. These packages make the difference between ubuntu and mepis. For mepis 6.0 you can use the ubuntu dapper packages: http://packages.ubuntu.com for common application search.
