Apologies if this has been posted, but my search did not show any appropriate hits.
I wanted to try MEPIS 6.0 on an AMD 64 bit system, but apparantly MEPIS for 64 bit is not out yet. I did a google search, and I found a couple of people saying that the 32 bit version works fine. But I wanted to get an idea from the LQ community as to the experience.
After installing Mepis on your hard drive you can get better performance by installing the K7 kernel(Mepis)
notes for doing that follow:
1-Install Mepis 6.0 as you normally would (it has the Mepis 2.6.15-26-386 kernel).
2- Then use Synaptic (or KPackage) to install the MEPIS kernel 2.6.15-26-k7 (its version number includes 'mepis
3- Then install the corresponding (2.6.15-26-k7) linux-restricted-modules package
4- As root copy and paste your regular Mepis boot entry down in /boot/grub/menu.lst and change '386' to 'k7'. Save it, reboot and select the boot-entry with the k7 kernel.
My Note! Keep the original kernel as backup and if you mess up you can use the live CD as Root and return the menu.lst back to 386.
Note! Inf below will help you find the kernel packages
A- In Synaptic Find this in the Base System
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.15 on AMD K7 SMP/UP
This package contains the Linux kernel image for version 2.6.15 on AMD
Duron/Athlon/Sempron with SMP support, the corresponding System.map file, and
the modules built by the packager.
B- Find this in Base System (Restricted)
Restricted Linux modules on AMD K7.
This package will always depend on the latest restricted modules available
for AMD Duron/Athlon.
Note! If you upgrade in the future be sure NOT to upgrade with the Ubuntu kernel but rather the one marked (Mepis).
