I am running SM 3.4.3. I am very much happy with it. It is a MacOSX like interface and installed Tovid, lame, DeveDe, Acidrip, mplayer, vlc. It was difficult for me to install most of the packages and I needed to change the repository every now and then just to install every packages I needed. I am really not good on the repositories but with the help of this site, there are kind people ready to help me which repos I need to add to get a certain package.
Now, I've heard that SM 6.0 is integrated with Dapper's Ubuntu. I am afraid that it will be difficult for me to add up the applications I have in 3.4.3 once I upgraded to SM 6.0. Is there a site which I can check out to see which repository is suitable for the SM 6.0. Or can someone tell me which repos I need to add so that I can get all the packages installed on my 3.4.3 such as tovid, avidemux, lame, devede, acidrip, mplayer and vlc. Thanks.
I have rc1 installed so checked Synaptic to see how many are available. Tovid, no - avidemux, yes - lame, installed - devede, no - acidrip, yes - mplayer , no, but it does have kmplayer - vlc, yes.
I don't have all the repositories checked, but I do have the free one checked. Maybe someone else can give you a better answer.
Did you change your repos from the one installed? If so, can you please tell me the suitable repo for the SM 6.0 and where can I find the list of repositories to install other packages.
I used the installed repos. All I did was add a checkmark to the free repo at the bottom of the list. I am sure there are other repos but never looked for them. Most likely Mepis 6.0 will have all that you are looking for and more.

I am using Mepis 3.4.3 fully upgraded through the Sid/unstable repos and apart from a few minor problems that occur temporarily with Sid, it works wonderfully.
It has xorg 7.0.22 (now in etch/testing) and kde 3.5.3.
An upgrade "should" be safe.
Someone on Mepislovers forum did it very recently without problems.
I tried Mepis 6 beta 2, but decided to stick with Mepis 3.4.3 as it had all that the new Mepis has.
I also think that Mepis 3.4.3 is the closest you will get to a pure Debian Sid setup (with it enabled of course even more than Kanotix, which I also have). Every package thatis downloaded is from the debian repos and nothing from the Mepis one and Warren said that the 3.4.3 kernel is totally debian compliant.
I think I'll run it under VMWare first. I am pretty much happy with the 3.4.3 but after Warren announced that his' team was able to make 600 patches its tempting to replace my 3.4.3. Another thing is that I am also using Ubuntu and I think merging the two OS is a new thing. Ubuntu is known for its user friendly linux while the Mepis is stable enough. Both are included in the top 5 in distrowatch. My only concern is if I can get back all the packages I installed in 3.4.3. I've tried using the debian rep on Ubuntu Breezy but unsuccessful. I am afraid that some repos working on 3.4.3 might not work on 6.0. Anyway, I'll give it a shot. If anyone out there can give me their complete repos that worked fine on SM 6.0, I will be thankful. By the way, does anyone know when will the SM 6.0 be stable? I'm kinda confused that after the beta version they released the RC1. What does the RC1 stand for and how many RCs are they going to upload before they come up with the stable?
rc1 = release candidate 1
who knows how many... from what i've gathered, the release of SM6 has been pushed back a few times by a few weeks, but it's probably for the best...
I upgraded to Kubuntu6.06 from SM3.4-3 and using Automatix (google for it) I have been able to install everything that I've needed.... except the great SM setup of using my NVIDIA video card to clone my monitor to the TV... SO if SM6 is using the Ubuntu repositories, I would bet that the Automatix will work and, using that and the standard repositories, you can get everything that you need...
Also in (k)ubuntu there is a way to open more (general) repositories... i am not sure if its as easy as checking a few new ones, or if you have to replace /etc/apt/sources.list (I did that to make sure to have them all...)
Both the Automatix and the "full" sources.list file can be found somewhere in the Ubuntu forums... this is a good start, with this and Automatix you'd be set: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper
MEPIS continues to fix bugs and prepare for the final release of 6.0. Regarding the release schedule, Warren said "We're getting more feedback from the community than ever before. A lot users have reported that MEPIS is working perfectly, but others continue to uncover bugs. We want this release to be the best it can be. So due to the outstanding bug reports, and the fact that the restructuring of the MEPIS utilities is incomplete, and the upcoming Independence Day Holiday, final release has been rescheduled for July 10. This is meant to be a firm final release date."
I use MEPIS 3.43 and from what little I know, it is based upon Debian, whereas MEPIS 6.0 is based upon Ubuntu (a Debian derivative).
Could someone explain to me, in plain English, what difference this makes to an average (and inexperienced) user like me?
For example: 1) Is MEPIS going to be a strictly Ubuntu based OS from now, 2) If yes, then why, 3) Without writing a novel, explain the difference between "regular" Debian (which is what MEPIS 3.43 is based upon) and "ubuntu" (which is what MEPIS 6.0 is based upon)?

1. Don't know for sure, you'll have to ask Warren. But the answer is probably - yes.
2. The Ubuntu repos are a snapshot of Debian Sid/unstable taken at a particular time and then modified/improved and 'frozen' for 6 months (I think it's six months). After release you will only get security upgrades for 3 years. It is supposed to be more stable for the user and much easier for the distro developer ie no moving target as in Debian Sid (it's dynamic, always changing)
3. See 2 above.
I prefer Mepis 3.4.3 and use the debian unstable repos. If something is broken it gets fixed pretty quickly. It is dynamic and you can upgrade forever (if you are careful and heed warnings). Mepis 6 is aiming to be more stable, but up to date (unlike Debian stable).
MBA Whore,
Read this: http://os.newsforge.com/os/06/02/09/159207.shtml?tid=2
it explains Warren's plans. If you don't yet understand the difference between "based on Ubuntu" & "building ... from Ubuntu sources" then you need to learn more about how Debian packaging works.
Or you could just accept Warren's statement: "MEPIS will remain MEPIS".
anticapitalista,
I am sticking w/ 3.3.2 because I hate the fish. I know how to kill them off, but I don't know how to get KWeather back, it's not in the Panel "Add -> Applet" menu. Can you tell me how?
