why to commit .cshrc "source .cshrc" file in every new shell session

Hello Everyone,

Some of my problems i'm facing in linux.

1. I'm new to linux environment and recently i installed mandriva 08 and i configured the .cshrc file then used source to commit changes but whenever i open new shell/shell tab/shell session i have to use source .cshrc to commit everytime. And if i do not use source in new shell session and try "echo $JAVA_HOME" then it doesn't shows the path of environment variable JAVA_HOME.

2. mp4 video file not working properly. video is ok but audio not ok. No audio in .mp4 file. I know it has been asked before in this forum but i didn't got it cleared why it happens? as it was working ok when i previously installed mandriva.

Thanks,
simer

Hi. 2008 is fairly old, in Linux years, so that's a bit puzzling but bash has been the default shell as long as I have used Mandrake -> Mandriva.

Code:
[rolf@localhost ~]$ echo $SHELL
/bin/bash
I can imagine, if you are, also, using bash, that you ought to be editing .bashrc, instead.

Also,

Code:
[rolf@localhost ~]$ which csh
/bin/csh
[rolf@localhost ~]$ ll /bin/csh
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2009-05-11 08:27 /bin/csh -> tcsh*
The actual program being used for csh is tcsh, so that might introduce complications, iow, I might expect .tcsh to be the name of the profile file.

For the video files, I am not an expert but there are codecs and capabilities that can't be distributed by Mandriva due to licensing and/or legal considerations, so some things only work with third-party applications, such as from PLF: http://plf.zarb.org/packages.php

Code:
[rolf@localhost ~]$ rpm -q mplayer win32-codecs libdvdcss2 smplayer
mplayer-1.0-1.rc2.23.r28791.2plf2009.1
win32-codecs-1.9-1plf2009.0
libdvdcss2-1.2.10-1plf2009.0
smplayer-0.6.7-1mdv2009.1
I am playing, atm, a .mp4 file in smplayer, with video and sound.
This is in 2009.1 and development is dynamic. There could be other factors.

Question why to commit .cshrc "source .cshrc" file in every new shell session

Hello Rolf,

I actually changed my shell from bash to csh.So in that case i'll be using .cshrc file only.

Well, thanks about mp4 support.

Thanks,
simer
