I like mandrake for most of the aforementioned reasions. But, the main reason I like mandrake is the availability of most all applications one could ask for in repositories. Between Contrib, PLF, and Thac's, its hard to find something you need that isn't in one of those. On the occasion that you do need a new version of something, I haven't had too much trouble compiling from source. If you dont try to use the latest and greatest all the time, you should have no troubles with this distro as a simple alternative to other OS's. That said there are some quirks Im about to ask for help with..
im prety new to linux (well about a month anyway) and i love mandrake. almost everything about it spells style. the only problem ive run into is that a lot of non-mdk-specific software will not install. of course this problem has mostly been solved with urpmi. that is one of my favorite features. being kind of new would hate to have to install everything from src.
i downloaded the 3 cd mdk10.1 official. it took about a day on DSL going about 25 kbps. thats not too long of a wait. i like haveing three cds vs. one because a lot of the software i like is allready included. with distros like suse i'd have to use their server to download all the packages i want and im not sure how long that would take.
overall, despite its glitches i love mdk. great distro.
I have tried Slackware, Debian, RedHat, Suse and Mandrake. All the other distros were difficult to administer and had hardware detection problems. When I install Mandrake, all my hardware just works. Software installation is easy. It runs great. I never have to mess with it much. Like the other poster, I like to just sit down at my computer and have fun. I work on computers for a living and don't want to spend all day working on mine.
I like Mandrake because it has the friendly style Gui like Windows but at the same time it has a way of easing the newcomer into using the command line at the same time i mean hell i know more about the command line due to Mandrake and having to compile things by hand.
But most of all i like Mandrake becuse it has found everything out of the box on the first try with no configuring at all from me Even on the winmodem ! (note i had to compile an old source driver for the modem which was not included), no other distro i have tried has even had that kind of success for me not even the Suse x.x.
It does everything i did in windows and more, i just can't say enough good things about it.
1) It is easy to configure using the mandrake control center
2) detects almost all hardware with ease
3) configures internet with no hazzle
4) provides me with the appropriate GUI
5) automounts me all the windows drives
6) shows unprecedented stability
7) has more system uptime than any other OS
8) provides support to all cool rpms and mdks
9) never has shown the slightest insecurity on the net
lol!! the list continues , i stop here..............
Well I would like it more if Mdk had a testing like Debian Testing which is up to date but not so bleeding edge like Debian Unstable, because Mandrake Cooker is very unstable meaning not-recommended for an everyday use system, unlike Deb Unstable I have used it as a everyday thing to work flawless but anyways.
