Where did Konqueror go?

I have little experience with Linux but having said that, I have tried everything advised about finding an answer that I understand and come up empty so here goes...

I installed Mandrake 10.1 on an empty HD (hdb) as a dual boot with Windoze from the 3CD free D/L discs and it was working fine. I had been attempting to install Firefox from an RPM with little success and gave up and logged off.

Next day I booted to Linux, it seemed to come up OK but the icons for all my discs and floppy were missing from the desktop.

When I clicked on Home icon, the taskbar said starting Konqueror but nothing happened and shortly that disappeared. In no way could I launch Konqueror, either form the pull up menus or from Konsole.

I closed the session, logged back on as root and it runs fine there.

It must be simple but I have spent two days, removing, re-installing etc. Searched for an answer and now I'm here.

I also can't access any of the drives directly logged in as a user but all is ok as root. Not being able to run Konqueror leaves me a bit stranded and I don't understand what I could be doing on re-install to still have this problem.

Not too technical an answer would be greatly appreciated....

KEN

When you say reinstall are you talking about reinstalling Konqueror or Mandrake as a whole? If is just the file manager portion of Konqueror? Can you use it for the internet, you should be able to do that with a link in kmail? Did you clean out any temp files?

Oh ya and launch Konqueror from a command line and post the results here.

Forgive me if this seem obvious but while you are working on this problem you are not going to want to run as root. Instead try using another gui like gnome.

This is a common problem that new users experience in Mandrake. You need to update your Mandrake. When Mandrake packaged 10.1, they messed up but they soon released a fix for this and it only affects a small percentage of users (me being one of them at the time)

Go to your Mandrake control center --> software --> UPDATE and check for all SEcurity and bug fixes. YOu should get about 500+ MB worth of fixes.

Thanks. The update fixed everything. I had done the "Update" thing on my re-install and never thought it would be required again.

Hi!

I also have the same problem with Konqueror, but when I do as described here...:
------
Go to your Mandrake control center --> software --> UPDATE and check for all SEcurity and bug fixes. YOu should get about 500+ MB worth of fixes.
-----
... I get the answer that no available mirrors can be locatet. Is this due to Mandrake changing name to Mandriva? Can anyone give me the address to an available/functioning site, so I can type it in manually?

I'd be veeeeeeeeeeeeery greatful for any help!

vwagheim,
Welcome to LQ.
You need to learn about "easy urpmi". Search this site for that phrase (the search button is above), to find the simple instructions, and use it: Your update / install new software problems will be solved!

You are welcome.
I hope you enjoy Mandrake 10.1 - It did not work well with my hardware, and I am happier with 9.1 (very stable, but doesn't handle USB well), and 2005LE (everything works better, but kmail has become over-complicated IMO).
Best wishes.
