Bummer, the guy didn't bring his card and now I have to wait till Tuesday to test.
However I'm almost 99.999%ly sure that the WL-011v2 that I have uses the AMD chip and the original WL-011 uses the Atmel 502 chip. More can be found here:

The Distro could make a difference however it is still Linux
Well, what did I do for the USB device:
I'm using Kernel number 2.4.22 and I just downloaded the drivers from
http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net . This is the same driver you can download at the sitecom website only that this one is newer.
then
tar -xzf atmel...driver.tar.gz changed into the new directory and made a "less INSTALL"
(Read the fine manual
)
the procedure just goes make config -> No to "build all" cause I didn't want to install the X app and No to Debug and yes to everything else. then make all, and make install.
that was relatively painless. and when I plugged in the USB device it was automagically detected. "ifconfig -a" already showed the new eth1 device. Then I had to play around with 'lvnet' - the command line config application.
Under site survey you can scan for access points and join them. Then you have to edit the WEP values and you're done. (BTW: Is there a way for it to keep the WEP key? )
If that doesn't work with your card I would at first try a "cardctl ident". That reads out the identification codes on the pccard itself. This way you can see whether the pcmcia stuff works. If so try a "modprobe pcifvnetr" to load the module and see what happens.
when you check lsmod it should show that the module is used. Then try to go on with lvnet.
I don't know much further right now, though.
