I look forward to reading your install results as I own a WL-011 But didn't figure how to make it work yet.

You're running a slackware and I'm using a Mandrake.... could that make a difference?

Bummer, the guy didn't bring his card and now I have to wait till Tuesday to test.

However I'm almost 99.999%ly sure that the WL-011v2 that I have uses the AMD chip and the original WL-011 uses the Atmel 502 chip. More can be found here: http://www.sitecom.com/userforum_2.php?thread_id=289

The Distro could make a difference however it is still Linux

Well, what did I do for the USB device:

I'm using Kernel number 2.4.22 and I just downloaded the drivers from http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net . This is the same driver you can download at the sitecom website only that this one is newer.

then tar -xzf atmel...driver.tar.gz changed into the new directory and made a "less INSTALL" (Read the fine manual )

the procedure just goes make config -> No to "build all" cause I didn't want to install the X app and No to Debug and yes to everything else. then make all, and make install.

that was relatively painless. and when I plugged in the USB device it was automagically detected. "ifconfig -a" already showed the new eth1 device. Then I had to play around with 'lvnet' - the command line config application.

Under site survey you can scan for access points and join them. Then you have to edit the WEP values and you're done. (BTW: Is there a way for it to keep the WEP key? )

If that doesn't work with your card I would at first try a "cardctl ident". That reads out the identification codes on the pccard itself. This way you can see whether the pcmcia stuff works. If so try a "modprobe pcifvnetr" to load the module and see what happens.

when you check lsmod it should show that the module is used. Then try to go on with lvnet.

I don't know much further right now, though.

Well, In the begining of the thread, all started because the compilation couldn't work.

I did all you describes but it never worked on my mandrake linux 9.1. At that time I was wondering if there was any gcc issue.

Finally, mandrake comes with binary modules for the atmel card that prevent any compilation. So I used them. However, the PC card is still not functioning. Problem could be with the card manager.

Concerning your WEP key, there should be a conf file associated with the wireless (like a wireless.conf in the kernel folder or something that sound the same). I didn't search for it yet as my card is not functioning, but I will.

hmm, have also tried the drivers from the link I posted? That seems to be a newer than the version on sitecom's website.

Other than that I'm puzzled, too.

Just a short update. I didn't get it working today. /var/log/messages just said that it's an unknown device.

When I loaded the modules manually they weren't used at all.

I already asked sitecom's support (again) if there's yet another version because this card looks almost exactly as mine except that it doesn't say "v2".

Ok, you're finally getting the same error as me

I'm wondering if sitecom have tested this product under linux and if so I would be very interested on their methods....

WL-011V2 - NO ATMEL-CHiP!!!

good (bad?) news everyone...
on the Sitecom W-011v2 (V2!!!) card is no atmel chip anymore. now there is an AMD AM1771/1772 Alchemy chip built on. only V1 (WL-011) got an atmel chip on it.
unfortunately there are no linux drivers available yet, though AMD will release them this year

Yup,

The problem is that I am using a V1 (supposed to be an Atmel card) but it never worked yet........

Misel tried too but he couldn't make it work either.......

no clues about it
