USB memory supermount pbm with MDK 9.2
Hi,
I am really confused with the automatic recognition of USB memory. I have found some information on the net, but never succeeded to understand fully what is happening. I did not see up to now a complete answer. I would appreciate to share experience with people with the same kind of problem, for me to understand better and if possible to solve the problem.
I am using Mandrake 9.2 with a standard installation. I am using supermount, probably kudzu (I am not sure about this, but the keyword appears in fstab whenever there is a relevant entry). I have no file whose name would contain the strings "kudzu" or "updfstab" on my system. I have no file "/etc/sysconfig/hwconfig" neither (default installation from Mandrake).
I have been using the USB memories (actually 2) with Suse 8.0 without problem. However, I had to explicitly mount them.
Using Mandrake 9.2, i can access the memory sometimes, sometimes not. Sometimes, I need to plug a second USB memory for the first to be recognised. Sometimes, I can see a process "devfsd" using significantly the CPU. Sometimes I get an error message saying "ldm_validate_partition_table(): Disk read failed".
Normally, as soon as I plug a USB memory, the USB system seems to recognise it (using usbview, for instance). "Files are created in the "/proc/bus/usb" directory, or in "/proc/scsi/usb-storage-n" directories. However, "/mnt/removable" does not show the contents of the memory. "removable" is the name assigned automatically by the system (does someone knows where this name is selected?). I noticed that "/dev/sda1" is not created in the "/dev" directory.
Of course when things are working properly, "/mnt/remvable" or "/mnt/removable2" and their related directories "/dev/sda1" or "/dev/sdb1" exist and give access to the content of the memory.
I understand that this message is not that clear, but I am really lost about this issue and I don't know how to be more precise.
As I said, any help, information or pointer would be very welcome.
Thank you very much in advance.
Pascal.
