Sound Blaster 16 card won't work

I've found Howto's online, but most of them get into programs and things that involve compiling source code and other things that are thoroughly over my head. Does anyone know of a (relatively simple) way to get a Sound Blaster 16 (not a PCI, it's one of those "plug and pray" things that plug into the big black slots) card to work on Mandrake? I used alsaconf but that doesn't seem to have done the job, and sndconfig doesn't seem to work either. I've tried using harddrake too, but my computer can't find that command. I'm afraid I'm completely out of ideas here... do you think it's possible to make this work, or is it time to get a regular PCI sound card?

Hmm ISA Soundblaster 16 hmm

you will probably definetly have to change IRQs

from memory the sound card uses 3 - 5 by default

keep changing it until you find one that lets it detect.

ps2 uses 10-12 so dont chose those,

8 is some network cards
11 should be free.

other than that its a long time i dealt with irqs and never in linux

sorry i cant help more but i hope it gets you on the right track

Normally for an ISA sound card
you would install and run
sndconfig

strange that it didnt work

floppy
