I used alsaconf but that doesn't seem to have done the job, and sndconfig doesn't seem to work either. I've tried using harddrake too, but my computer can't find that command. I'm afraid I'm completely out of ideas here... do you think it's possible to make this work, or is it time to get a regular PCI sound card?

Hmm ISA Soundblaster 16 hmm
you will probably definetly have to change IRQs
from memory the sound card uses 3 - 5 by default
keep changing it until you find one that lets it detect.
ps2 uses 10-12 so dont chose those,
8 is some network cards
11 should be free.
other than that its a long time i dealt with irqs and never in linux
sorry i cant help more but i hope it gets you on the right track
