Well i am new and i installed Mandrake 10.2 b2

I have some questions

1)Online Updates for 10.2 will be realeased as soon as the stable version comes out? or are they available right now? How?

2) I have two soundcards... An onboard and a PCI... How can i tell to Mandrake to use the PCI as the default soundcard?

3)Downloaded the Nvidia drivers... I type init 3... Askś for a username... Type "root" and my password... It confirms... Now it takes me to a folder, that has another 'tmp' folder and another I don remember. Both empty... How can I navigate to my Home directory so I can execute the driver setup? EDIT:Solved this one... I should have typed cd / in the first place.
So i try to install and it says that I don;t have a precompiled kernel, and it asks me if i want the installer to connecty to the internet to download one from nvidia's website... Now what?

Hi. For the first question, I don't know, I don't use Mandrake.

2- At boot up you should go to the BIOS and disable the onboard soundcard.

3- If you have an internet connection, say Yes. If not, say No, check if you have kernel sources installed in /usr/src and the installer will compile the modules for you.

I said no because the server wasn't responding so it compiled by itself...

Did I read you right Mandrake 10.2 b2. If your new to linux why are installing a beta? It still full of bugs. You should be installing 10.1 Official. It don't have any of the problems with it that 10.2 beta has. I haven't been able to get the Nvidia drivers to load on 2 out of 3 machines so far with the beta.

I have done all the steps required to install nvidia drivers... I even changed the nv to nvidia in that XF86Config file... But I don't know if the drivers work correctly....

I didn't download the ISO's... I was given the CD's to check them out... I wasn't told that they were beta... In the middle of the installation I realised that they were actually a beta version but I couldn't stop right on the middle... So i said, how buggy can they be, and continued... This far, they seem to me very stable... Not the most user friendly but ok, its still beta...

I managed to make them work... I had to change the etc/modprobe.preload via-agp entry into nvidia..
That solved the problem
Perhaps i am not as noobie as i believe
