Angry please help sl modem drivers Problem

Hi

I am a novoice in linux.
I am using Mandrake Linux 10.1 official release. kernel version: 2.6
My computer is a celeron 2.4 with 256 mb ram, onboard sound, VGA and LAN (845). I also have a smart link pci652 modem

I have 2 problems

1. I downloaded the drivers for the modem from smart link (since mandrake did not support it) and tried installing it. But it gave me an error - no rules bla bla.

2. I am un able to control volume on linux.

Please advice

You gave every info except the most important one: the error message. So please post it.

Question

I have managed to fix the modem and it is working fine. I had forgoten to install the kernel source.

But i still am not able to control the volume.
Mine is on board audio ICH4 854G/GL Chipset AC 97 Audio Controller
When the ALSA Mixer is loading when booting, it gives an error saying that there is no sound card.
I tried every thing from changing the driver to making sure that audio was enabled in the BIOS.
Kmix is showing the device as unknown. But Harddrake is detecting it as ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC 97 Audio Controller and not as unknown devices.

Please advice.

output of lsmod | grep sound is

soundcore 7008 | snd

I just found that Kmix is detecting my sound card as 82801DB-ICH4
I also found that sound control is working if I put a audio CD. But it does not work for MP3 or other formats including Vedio
