pls i wanted to get my acpi, usb and sound working and some other devices. and i went to config-2.4.22-10mdk to change some settings. i was seeing stuff like =m or =y or ....not set. does the "y" represent yes and what does "m" mean and the "not set". what exactly is this config file for?. and again i arranged my desktop and menudrake and logged out. when i logged back in i saw that the arrangement has been erased both on taskbar and menu panel. but the programs are still working. and the last, my sound is faint although it woked when i tried using another driver for the soundcard (Ali 5455). i tried the trident driver for it and it workded but faintky but there was a time it came full blast. acpi works now as my laptop powers off by itself when shut down but the battery monitor doesnt show on the taskbar.
The config file tells Linux which options to include if you recompile your kernel.
I very much doubt that you need to recompile your kernel to get these things working. They should all be in the default kernel you get.
However, if you are going to do that, you need to look at one of the many guides around the web on recompiling a linux kernel. To answer your question, m means module - only loaded when needed.
To get acpi working, try editing /etc/lilo.conf and adding to the options line "apci=on apm=off". Run lilo and then reboot.
Have you tried setting the sound volume using aumix? It may just be that the volume is set low.
You shouldn't post the same topic in more than one post - see the link at the bottom of the page about rules. People will see your post, even if it only posted once. Many people just use the "New Posts" and "Threads with 0 Replies" pages rather than browsing the individual forums anyway.
You should try to make your post as easy to read as possible. I don't mean proper English, just things like breaking separate questions into separate paragraphs.
Please don't take offence from this, and you don't need to reply at all, it's just a friendly aside.
