Problems installing jre

I am running Mandrake 10.1, and trying to install java runtime environment according to instructions found here

http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/view/KB/UtilsUjava

I created the file java.sh with the lines JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.5.0<br> export JAVA_HOME<br> PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin<br> export PATH

but When I open a shell I get the message

bash: br: No such file or directory
so I think that <br> is some "jolly" character, but what does it stand for?

Sorry for the stupid question, but I am definitely a newbie...

<br> is HTML, it doesn't belong in your java.sh file. You should just start a new line where those <br> tags are.

It would probably be better if you just added those lines to ~/.bash_profile instead of having to have a *.sh file. Otherwise Nylex is correct.

On an otherwise unrelated note, I advise you to upgrade to Mandriva 2007.0 Free since its the latest version and Mandrake 10.1 has reached EOL. The following link will give you more information on supported distrobutions by Mandriva:

http://www.mandriva.com/security/productlifetime

Mandriva 2007.0 is the best that I've used of Mandriva and I've been using it since Mandriva 8.2.

The formatting in the link you posted is wrong. The script should be something like
Code:
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.5.0
export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$JAVA_HOME/jre/bin
Remember to make it executable.
