Talking Nvidia Onboard Sound Trouble

Hello,
I just installed Mandrake 10.0 from the 3 disc ISOs, and everything went very smoothly with little configuration. The only problem is my sound. In KDE, I get a little slash through the sound speaker and it says "Couldn't open device dev/sound/mixer" when I click on it. There is no sound or mixer folder in /dev.
I'm using an onboard nForce card, and I installed the latest drivers fron nVidia's site and added the one line to the conf file like they asked, but no luck. I see the card in harddrake, and it has the correct driver installed.
By the way, this is my first day away from Windows, so I'm terrible at trouble shooting Linux so far... I've been googling for hours, and it's hard to tell what conversations even relate to my problem let alone what to do. Looks like I'll have to read a book or two
Well if anyone can help me with my problem, I will be eternally greateful. It's after 1am and I have to work in the morning. Thank you and goodnight.

New things I've noticed since I've been modprobing anything I can think of:

mixers now open (aumix, nvmixer etc, with options and a description of my card).

Here is more information my sound card, in case anyone was wondering:
Name: nForce Audio
Hardware Model: nForce2 MCP
Hardware Revision: a1
Codec Manufacturer: Realtek
Codec Modle: ALC650

sound plays on most applications

gnome desktop is still mute

same "couldn't load device /dev/sound/mixer" error (and I still don't have a sound or mixer folder in /dev).

I wish I knew what I did... but yeah. If anyone can help me with the little gnome icon or the boot error, I'd still love you forever

Talking Finally Solved

Hooray, everything is up and running with the snd-intel8x0 driver. I'm just happy everything works. As for that icon, I just deleted the panel and added one for a working mixer Thanks for all your help everyone!
