I recently decided to try linux, and got myself a copy of mandrake 9, recently was on a cover disk here in the UK
I installed everything on a little p200 mmx box, with 256 mb ram and onboard s3 video card
all went well, untill the install was finished.
The screen display was distorted/corrupted, and having read about the issue, it appears that I would have fun and games trying to get the driver sorted out for the video card.
Therefore, i pulled the card so to speak, and dropped in a different video card - now came the problem
The resolution is so low, I can't see the boxes to change the resolution.... which is a tad frustrating!
How do I fix this? is there a simple way that I can do it??
Please spell out any answers in easy words etc - I am a total noob with linux!
(If there is a command to be run from the console(?) please include how to do that as well - I really am that freshfaced...
Try CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to drop to renlevel 3. (or, when booting, enter
init 3
before X boots. I am unfamiliar with Mandrakes boot screen, so maybe someone else can help there.) Anyway, assuming that you can get to runlevel 3 (non X bootup), log into the console as root OR
su - root
If you cannot get the graphical environment at boot time, and only the command-line interface, log in as root and launch the XFdrake command. You will get the exact same tool as described in the Section , “XFDrake: Full-Configuration Video Tool” section, but in text mode.
If the 'dialogue boxes' are too big for the screen, you can drag them around until you get the the correct bit easily enough. Now, under Windows you can only drag a 'window' about by clickholding on the title bar. You can do the same under almost all GUIs in Linux, but you can also manage it by a different method. Hold down the <ALT> button on the keyboard and left clickhold anywhere on the window/dialogue box. You can then move the window about. If you get to the edge of the screen and you still can't see the bit you need, then do it again! You can keep doing this until you find the bit you want. Cool or what?
