I would like to download the free version of mandriva, but I have one question before I proceed, I would like to know if the 3d desktop comes with the free version.
They work well for some... I can't get beryl working at all, or the updated compiz..only the one on the release cd . The 3D Metisse included in the latest live Gnome cd looks promising...
Metisse will be available for KDE as well as Gnome when 2007.1 is released.
Well, sure it works somehow, but not that well, there are lots of bugs and you have to mess around with the drivers if you have an Nvidia or ATI card. I didn't got the updated version of Compiz to work neither, btw.
Metisse is no real 3d desktop. But lets see how it will work.

Ok, I'm no guru but,
I had a perfectly working version of 07 free with the nvidia driver working and all packages installed..I then decided to click to add the 3D effects..O'boy did it mess up my desktop so bad that I
eventually had to re-install..
Many fine posters tried to help but it was too far gone in
my case..
Every time my mouse would hover over a desktop icon the letters would turn to colored gibberish..Even worse than that it was very unstable..If for example you tried to change a web page it would bounce you to the logon screen..
You may not have all those problems but be careful..

I'm new at this Linux stuff too. Been trying Mandrake since version 7.2. Installed Mandriva 2007 Free and couldn't get much of anything working. Nvidia driver never would build. No 3D anywhere without the Nvidia driver. Removed Mandriva all together and loaded PCLinuxOS-nvidia. Everything I needed was on the CD and the Nvidia driver works fine. Didn't have to download or setup anything special or play games to make it work. PCLinuxOS 2007 is going to be out soon and will have the 3D desktop available, I'm waiting for it. As for Mandriva, it's getting to be too much like M$ for me. If you're new at this stuff, stick with what works.
